The same reason why the windows, OS/2 or GNUstep dialogs weren't "just
copied", I suppose. GNOME stands on its own.

They are important because they draw an association with Nautilus.

'New folder' could be useful in the Save-dialog (perhaps it's under a
contextmenu?), but it's not a basic requirement. AFAIK there never was a
favorites functionality in any GNOME filedialog..?!

The current proposal is the result of discussion on this list earlier, so
now is a bit too late to re-start discussion on the entire design.

This is not to say I'm completely enthousiastic about the new dialogs,
though: for one, it confuses me that the filename field is on top in the
Save dialog and on the bottom in the Open dialog. And I don't think
Advances Options should be a checkbox (though the HIG allows for it).
Nevertheless it's an awesome improvement over the current dialogs!
