There is a definition of the word "application" in GNOME, just like
there is for a lot of other common computer-related terminology. Just
have a look at the GNOME Word List at

"application" mentioned and described on
http://developer.gnome.org/documents/style-guide/gnome-glossary-generic-terms.html.
