I agree, i never use overwrite and dont like the concept of modes.  I have
fat chance of convincing them to drop the modes.  Even if the idea were to
get strong support from the experts, there would need to be some way to
reenable Overwrite mode for the rare few who use it.

A vaguely interesting side note to this story is that we used to have
"Emacs Mode" and "Vi Mode" if you hit F10 (?) you would switch to having
keybindings like the aforementioned programs.  This mode is no longer
available due to the risk of confusing ordinary users, but can still be
enabled by manually editing the abiword configuration file (but the
feature only covers some basic keybindings and is largely unmaintained).
