Ok, you've convinced me that these 3 modes are not exclusive to each
other, and so shouldn't be represented that way. I'd certainly like to
hear your ideas on how to layout the UI to properly show the correct
relationships between the different possible views in gthumb.

Okay, let's have a look at the layouts and how we might do a tab bar.
Firstly, I'll argue that the thumbnails list must be grouped with the
folders list, because they both show the contents of the current
directory. So the contents of the notebook should hold the path entry,
folders list, and thumbnails list.

In the first layout, this is pretty straight forward, because these
three things are all collected along the left side, so the tab bar
doesn't need to extend across the whole window. However, in the other
three layouts, in order to keep the grouping of folders and files, the
tab bar would need to extend across the whole window, resulting in quite
a bit of wasted horizontal space.

I'm not sure what the best UI is for gthumb given how it works. I do
know that the current UI is lacking, and I don't think a tab bar -- at
least as I described it above -- is a good idea either.

What are your thoughts? Or maybe I'm visualizing your ideas wrong?

Jason.
