Gedit doesn't currently allow you to take out the tabs as far as I know.
If you take out the tabs the last thing you want to do is have a bar
wasting space only to tell you such non-essential information as the
document being read only.

Put it in the status bar and say "Read Only" instead of write protected
and it could work.

I think a lock icon on its own would be enough though, and it could be
made clickable to show a dialog containing more detailed
protection/permsission information.
