Perhaps it might be reasonable to show both entry fields, but after the
user name is entered and sent to pam, if something besides a password is
needed, insensitize the password field and display a brief message
saying what is required? (I have no idea if pam provides any sort of
human readable messages)

If PAM API problems are making GNOME unusable, then we need to get nicer API into PAM.

In particular, there could be a call to ask "are there any non-username-plus-password authentication methods configured?". In the 9 out of 10 (99 out of 100?) cases where the answer is "no", we can just display the simple username+password login screen.
