Steve had his way, and you are pretty much describing the dock on
macs. AFAIU, it has some number of predefined and most recently used
programs there and provides a "hey look at me" notification too. There
is no right-clicking due to mac way of relying on just one button on
the mouse (just tried and command-click just opened Finder with the
location of the application, not too useful IMO...).
