While all context to my comment has been removed the bit I was replying to was

All application drawing still needs to be done using the standard
toolkits, so there is no "throwing the image directly at the GPU"
The compositor only cares about drawing windows on the screen. Any
content inside a window is scaled by the application.
So I stand by my comment that "there would be no need for thumbnailing
at all, because we could just throw the image directly at the GPU" is
most defintely not how compositing works.
