For what i have read of the HIG, it just has 1 image where it states
pixel spacing... and a few others that refer to that image (i think
it's the alert message window) those pixel spacing could be half as
long... but the size problem with most applications in gnome, i
believe, could come from automatic user interface design programs like
Glade (and the developers), i have been using it for a while now and
it automatically handles the space positioning of your items on
screen, making space more scarce since it manages how far away the
items are one from another and handles the size of items as you
increase or reduce the actual size of the window in some cases
regardless of the HIG specifications (like tool icons placement) and
also the developers who did not allow a smaller minimum size for some
windows and items in it (like buttons and text view).
As of right now how many developers actually use the HIG and to what
extend, i don't know, most programs in gnome look very nice and very
professional (and in some cases very casual witch is nice too) but how
many of those might go the extra mile of fixing their interfaces in
order to make them better, i don't know either, the good thing is that
almost all are GPL so anyone can help this developers (like i should)
and make the interfaces better for all, it is just that, it takes more
work and effort if we start fixing this problem case by case....
