cvs -d :pserver:anonymous@anoncvs.gnome.org:/cvs/gnome login
(password empty; hit return when prompted)

Patches are submited to the mailing list, AFAIK.

Start with stuff on http://bugs.gnome.org/ -- there is lots of stuff
needing work there.
