But Pawel Salek criticizes this approach:

I appreciate Pawel's advice, but I would have to add "except
when they work for you too". I.e., Alexey's approach seems
to work. As Pawel points out, it may break other things, but
I haven't seen any problems yet. Also, I did nothing to change
"XLFD" (in fact, I don't know what it is).

The only problem this left me with was that balsa seems able
to deal only with one encoding, or perhaps only one at a 
time. This was easily fixed with a filter that converts all
incoming messages to EUC.

Thanks, Alexey and Pawel (I'm sure Pawel is correct that a
better fix is needed).
