Don't quote me on this, but it might be whatever version of gob you're using
causing problems.  I know in the past changes to the libinit files have
necessitated a gob upgrade, however I can't remember the exact form of the
error messages I ended up getting.

I know that the latest Debian version (1.0.4-1) works on my Linux i386
system, you might want to try upgrading to at least that.
