Like I said before the fact that balsa runs fine without the lock is mostly
due
to good luck...
There are almost certainly mutt functions which can be safely called without
the lock - but figuring out which ones is no small task..
The idea of loading messages in a thread is quite a good one, but I think it
would require quite a large change to the way things work in balsa.. I would
consider it a long term plan..

I can check now for IMAP mail and open existing mailboxes, get POP mail ...
