My first guess is to check Preferences/Mail Options/Outgoing: "Send
button always queues outgoing mail in outbox". Most of the time, you
want to have it unchecked. checked button makes sense only for off-line
set ups. (I guess the long term solution is to have "Queue" button in
the toolbar button gallery).
