Indeed. fortunatly the gtk+ people agree gtkctree/list blow dead bears and
it's slated to be phased out on 2.1. GtkTree is supposed to be much better
than CTree, but i never actually looked at. 
If it's not GoodEnough<tm> i propose we look at ETree/List (from libgal). It has
loads of nifty gui stuff and it's faily fast
