Yes, read the RFCs. Don't write a single line of code till you understand
them. Interoperability is all-important. Don't do anything that is not
blessed by a normative standard. Don't do anything that makes subsequently
implementing S/MIME difficult.
I posted the references for the relevant RFCs recently.

Nice thought, but I doubt its going to be that simple. You'll need a mechanism
to manage public certificates for people you want to write to and to
manage private certificates for signing and decrypting. And that's only
to start.
I figure one reason nobody's done this to date is that it's not
easy to do.
