SMTP troubles

Hi,

I'm having trouble sending outgoing mail.  The smtp exchange is:

server: 220 mofo.meme.com ESMTP Postfix
balsa: EHLO mofo.meme.com
server: 250-mofo.meme.com

server: 250-ETRN

At that point the dialog stops and eventually times out.

I'm using:
Redhat 7.1
postfix-20010202-5SASL
balsa-1.1.6-1
libesmtp-0.8.1-2

Any clues?  I'm completely stuck and don't feel like going to read code.

The only odd thing about my configuration, and I don't see the
relevance, is that my machine has different IP addresses depending on
whether the address is resolved with DNS (publicly available) or via
/etc/hosts.  This is because my machine is currently only on the net
via dialup, and some mail relays are paranoid and want to verify that
the hostname of the sender (as reported in the envlope addresses
somewhere) resolve with dns.  To make sure the hostname resolves, and
so bounced mail can get somewhere, I've put it in my public dns zone,
with one of my public addresses, but locally the host has a martian
(private) ip.
