Mandrake install/build problems

Help!  I'm in install hell trying to get balsa 1.2.3-1
installed on a Mandrake 8.1 system.
a) Install of binary rpm failed with missing dependencies
b) Build of rpm src failed with gcc 1.96
c) Build of rpm src with gcc 3.0.1 fails to find pspell,
    but pspell was just installed from rpm src.

Any ideas?
