Probably, your problem is that the RPM for SuSE that contains libesmtp
has a version of libesmtp that was built WITHOUT OpenSSL support.
Without an OpenSSL-capable libesmtp, authentication over SMTP is likely
to prove painfully elusive.
My Balsa-1.2.3 (running under FreeBSD 4.4-STABLE) is supported by a
libesmtp built with OpenSSL support, and I have entries in the
preferences dialog to support authentication (although my SMTP server
does not currently require authentication).
