Yes, of course you are right at this point. Usually the user will set the 
LANG environt variable, e.g. for german either to de_DE (in which case we 
should use the default) or to de_DE.<charset> which should result in 
<charset> being used. So it might be a good idea to just check the result of 
g_getenv("LANG"). IMHO there should be no further config option.
