I suspect this is not sufficient... To get a working environment with german
national characters, I have to set (e.g. in .bashrc)
export LC_ALL=de_DE.ISO-8859-1
export LANG=de_DE.ISO-8859-1
This was discussed in this list some time ago. Although the system *should* be
able to guess the right encoding just from de or pl, apparently you must add
the charset... I am not sure if you need both of them, though. So, for polish
(and other central european languages) the following might help:
export LC_ALL=pl_PL.ISO-8859-2
export LANG=pl_PL.ISO-8859-2
