LibMutt's Base64 Encoding Speed

I noticed that Libmutt's Base64 encoding speed deteriories when
a file of more than 1 mb is attached and sent out. While it is
not too obvious on fast machines, the experience can be quite a
drag on slower machines...
I wonder if anyone can offer an alternative or any amendments
to Libmutt's Base64 functionalities?
BTW, out of this topic, does anyone know the limit of the
message size that Balsa can handle, after the user has clicked
the button "Send"?
