You can also reproduce something like this when looking for new mail one 
more then one times and everytime a new one arrived but you don't change 
something in the mailbox (you stay at the same mail all the time)

After that the new msg-count is updated, but you are not able to scroll 
somewhere else in the list, first you have to hit next unread...

very strange and hard to explain :-)

perhaps try with a few cron-jobs which does send mail to you, or some 
larger mails recieved with fetchmail...
just hit more than once get new mail and try to scroll to the last new one 
(you can't see it, 'cause the tree is one above the last (and new) one...)

it's simply not possible
