After some more testing, I found the simple solution: just hide the tab 
initially *after* the notebook has been realised... Below is a very small 
patch to solve the tab issue. It must be applied *after* the patch from 
the beginning of this thread (May 22nd). So if you want to commit this all 
to the cvs, it would really be great!
