New messages in a thread show up collapsed

Just like in early 2.0.x versions, in 2.2.3 new messages that
are received in an existing thread in an open mailbox are shown
collapsed, even though I have set "expand mailbox tree on open".
It was fixed in 2.0.something, 2.2.x seems to revert to the
old behaviour ?
