Balsa cvs HEAD now (ChangeLog revision 1.1948) looks for icons  
like gnome-mime-text-plain, and, on my (FC3) box, finds files  
like  
/usr/share/icons/Bluecurve/48x48/mimetypes/gnome-mime-text-plain.png.   
It currently looks for 48x48 icons, but in testing, it returned  
those even when asked for 24x24, which also seems to exist.   
There are symlinks that I didn't try to disentangle...
