Well, that's a tough nut to crack.
The sort/thread extensions document states:
6.4.SORT. ...Note that unlike SEARCH, the searching charset
argument is mandatory. The US-ASCII and UTF-8 charsets MUST be
implemented. All other charsets are optional.
so the server appears to be broken.
