Hi Aaron,

I've found the error. In mp3-lame.xml was one exclamation point at the 
wrong place. Here comes the version that works:

<process id="gstreamer">
audioconvert !
audio/x-raw-float,rate=$sample_rate,channels=$channels !
audioconvert !
lame
bitrate=$bitrate
mode=$mode !
id3v2mux
</process>

With that banshee produces MP3s in the choosen mode.
