currently banshee does not support id3 v2.4 in writing or reading. It only does v2.3 as of right now. Support for 2.4 is coming however. I am not sure why your player wouldn't be reading the tags if it supports v2.3.
I'm not sure this is true. I had the same problem weeks ago (with the CD player of my car) and I did two tests:
1. Take one audio file and clean its tags (with id3v2). Then go to Banshee, Edit this track (with some silly change) and Save. Then the ID3 tags are filled again.
With this test, my car radio (which only reads 2.3) couldn't read the tags of the file.
2. Take the same file and save the tags to 2.3 (with EasyTag).
With this second test, my car radio displayed the tags perfect.
I prefer 2.4 tags because they are at the end of the file so I think the updating (playcounts and so) is faster. But, in the case of my radio car, I have to copy the tracks apart, and then edit them with EasyTag to save tags to 2.3.
