todo: use bsdgrep on FreeBSD
It looks like it supports all the options we use, where as GNU grep on
FreeBSD is outdated and lacks --exclude-dir support.
No need to add a setting for this, since I doubt FreeBSD will remove
bsdgrep even when they update GNU grep (if they do).
