Revert "Try reenabling on-demand hardware acceleration"
This reverts commit 2b0064cfb7ca25212b7445a55adbe8248ba4373d.
It's a sporadic failure, but sufficiently-frequent to be problematic and
definitely AC mode to blame. This is a blocker.
