I am currently making a fairly major effort to debug the whole issue of
preferences (ie: preferences as a non-developer/newbie/MS user would
understand)

Following the latest upgrades to GConf,gnome-libs etc gconfeditor ceased
working

It would be useful if someone could send (to list or
mike redtux demon co uk or ftp to 158.152.117.135) a copy of the
following file

/etc/gconf/gconconf.defaults/apps/%gconf.xml
/etc/gconf/gconconf.defaults/%gconf.xml

an ls of /etc/gconf/gconconf.mandatory
