Pango Anti-Aliasing

I have just finished installing (gtk2/gnome2 parts of) gnome-hide on one 
box and cvs HEAD on another. Running the test programs for various libs 
(libgnome, libgnomecanvas) work perfectly on both.

However when i start one of the gnome 2 applications, the text (menu's & 
in windows) doesnt appear to be anti-aliased. Is there a setting 
(envirioment, config file?) i need to set?

(ps, yes i do run XFree 4.1.0 (rh72 stock) with Xrender enabled, and i 
have freetype 2.0.5 installed).

Any help would be apreciated
