I think I have got it now.

The fact that the number of the current interface of the library is 17 is an 
error on my part. I had hoped to correct this error but it is clear to me that I 
cannot and that I must move move forward with that number.

I will ensure that the number does not change with new releases of the library 
unless I break ABI which it is not my intention to do.
