Minutes of the GNOME 2.0 Release Team Meeting - 2002/03/01

Extremely late. Of all the minutes to *be* late, these were the
worst.

     ** Note schedule stuff. **

Minutes of the GNOME 2.0 Release Team Meeting - 2002/03/01
==========================================================

Present:

Jody Goldberg
Jamin Gray
Greg Leblanc
Michael Meeks
Sander Vesic
Luis Villa
Jeff Waugh

Regrets:

Calum Benson
John Fleck

Missing:

Kjartan Maraas
Maciej Stachowiak
Seth Nichell

Completed actions:
==================

   DONE: Jeff to get experimental GNOME info from Debian hackers
	=> The bulk of Gnome-2 stuff is available in Debian sid.
	In addition, there is a separate repository Christian
	Marillat maintains:
	deb http:///marillat.free.fr/ unstable main
	and Jeff will make sure this is listed someone prominent.

   DONE: Greg will look at the install-module script for the FTP site and
	  see whether a --news argument can be added.
	=> Yes, it can.

Previous actions:
=================

  PENDING: Jeff + John to link documentation on dotplan.
	=> Still more to go, but many of the docs about API changes
	are linked on the site now.

  PENDING: Luis to sort out bug reports script for Fridays
	=> The format is done and tested; just needs hooking into cron now.

  PENDING: Greg to talk to Jacob about merging packaging effort
	=> Some discussion, and more discussion on desktop-devel-list

  PENDING: Michael or Louie to post Sherriffs proposal to hackers/desktop
	=> Michael will post ASAP.

  PENDING: Sander to post module split proposal to hackers/desktop
	=> Sander thought he had; has it not got through?

  PENDING: Jody and John to discuss Jody's patches for docs-building.
	=> Started, but the discussion petered out a bit. One suggestion
	is detailed in new action below.

New actions:
============

  NEW: Jody to investigate possibilities and pitfalls associated with
	creating a docs-build module.

  NEW: Jeff to inform gnome-hackers, desktop-devel-list and so on of
	change to schedule.

Decisions and discussions:
==========================

Documentation-building:
-----------------------

* Documentation-building is still too much of a problem. People often
cut and paste documentation building scripts from other modules, with
no gyarantee that it's the most up-to-date and bug-fixed versions.
Perhaps a single module with The Documentation Building Process might
be better: people can just include it. Gnome has lots of very different
sets of documentation. We would need to ensure the same thing would
work with (for example) gnome-games, gnumeric, and gnome-terminal.
This might be quite tricky, and it's a bit late in the day to start
adding new requirements. It might go off and break automatic build
scripts and snapshots. This would be bad.

The schedule:
-------------

Looking at the current schedule, RC-1 packages are due in three days
and the release by the end of the month. This was generally felt
unlikely. There are still many bugs to fix.

Sander proposed two three-week cycles more in the schedule before
RC-1. We think this is a good plan. It will not interfere with the
weekly snapshots. They will continue as before.

So two more three-week cycles are going in as betas before RC-1.

Apologies in advance:
=====================

Karl Gaffney will be away for next meeting (8th March).
Telsa Gwynne will be away for the meeting after that (15th March).

Telsa
