My employer let me setup test X-terminal enviroment. We have Athlon-850
server with 256 Mb (PostgreSQL, Samba TNG and Apache also running)
without monitor and 4 diskless X-terminals (K6-2 500 and Celeron-300
with Riva TNT2 Vanta and S3 Trio 64V2). Network is 100Mb Ethernet with
switched hub. All terminal soft are from ltsp.org and ltsp.ru.
I haven't expirienced all your troubles at all! Antialiasing, Nau,
gradient background with transparent picture above it, menu icons - all
work very quick. More of that - IMHO one of advantages of terminal
solution is client-side rendering so its no need to have power
X-terminal, only power server (seems more RAM is better than more MHz
for server).
I think you have problems with your setup (old X-server?). Take a look
at ltsp.org, may be you'll find the solution there.
Regards,
Dmitry
