For xfree86 environment, gswitchit does better job on keyboard layout handling. It utilizes XKB extension in a more proper way that gkb does (natively using XKB API - not just invoking setxkbmap). So, being more XKB-tied, it provides more features (like per-window layout) and works significantly faster (no external processes launched to switch layouts). There is also nice configuration capplet which allows layout preview (using xkbprint+ggv+bonobo). All this (and some other small featurelets) makes gswitchit better choice for people with xfree (especially 4.3.0 with its great new xkb stuff - which, BTW, was also designed in gswitchit-compatible, gswitchit-derived and gswithit-oriented way - see XML-based configuration repository). Though I have to admit, for X servers without XKB extension gswitchit is 100% useless while gkb still can be used. Well, I do not really like to PR gswitchit:) So if there are some users around - could they please tell their opinions. Actually, personally I am not 100% convinced that gswitchit should be a part of gnome core (I am happy to be in 5th Toe). But some users expressed this idea here and there...
