Why would you expect newer GNOME stuff to be supported by older GNOME
versions? Obviously people try to keep things as compatible as possible, but
I doubt anyody is expecting people to downgrade to an older GNOME.

I know of at least one large installation of GNOME that is using RH9
GNOME 2.2 and Sun GNOME 2.0 with shared NFS homedirs. They've had a
bucketload of problems, which I've asked them to write down for our
benefit, but they have not yet done so.

This is going to be fairly common. Especially since, historically, the Sun release cycles are much longer than the GNOME cycle. The two versions will often get out of sync. Here at JHU we are waiting for the next Sun GNOME release before we open this can of worms.

Once 2.4 is released (with RH10?) we will have a mixed GNOME 2.2 (RH9) and 2.4 (RH10) environment with shared home directories and users switching back and forth. Keywords=ABI/API stability, enterprise.

Cheers,
Jon
