I'm getting other problems now- both e-d-s and gnome-vfs are giving me:

The OrigTree module doesn't seem to be properly installed
../intltool-merge

during 

LC_ALL=C ../intltool-merge ../po GNOME_Evolution_DataServer.server.in GNOME_Evolution_DataServer.server -o -u -c ../po/.intltool-merge-cache

and

LC_ALL=C ../intltool-merge ../po system_http_proxy.schemas.in system_http_proxy.schemas -s -u -c ../po/.intltool-merge-cache

respectively. Any clues?
