the cd player does. It'd be a pain for every app that does to have to
tell the user to add the applet if it is not there already

if anything i would make it translucent so that it still looks like it's
there. (And change the default background colors #101701) but until the
menu panel can be made translucent too and panel applets' background
inherits the panel's background it might look a bit weird.
