It's been a long time since I threw away my blue external 100M zip
drive, but I remember that the drive as "locked" once it was mounted,
and hitting eject did nothing.

I think on Windows the OS noticed you hit the eject button, flushed its
cache, and then sent an eject command.  Of course, I may be totally
wrong, but on Linux I know the button did nothing until the disk was
unmounted.
