There is nothing more I love to hear than someone asking questions like
that. That kind of thinking is what makes GNOME so great. ^_^

Not necessarily. It means that all sound-using apps have to have access
to the sound device. One possible (worst case scenario) problem with
having all those apps have access is if a bug is present in the kernel-
level sound system, local users could exploit it, while with a sound
server controlled by SELinux (Sickeningly Elaborate Linux?) or some
similar mechanism guarantees that users can't run malicious code that
accesses the device files.
No, it's not the greatest reason, just a minor tidbit to keep in mind.
