Well, if you need to do it in an automatic way, I guess three steps would be needed. Does anyone have any solution to this, without adding the third step? Could you trick one of the parts to do the macro expansion for @VERSION@ elsewhere - or move the other stuff? I don't know them too well, and it's late, so I won't start guessing. Regarding the bug-buddy reports, I just guess you've been lucky with having clever users who filled in the version number. But, if they got it right or not could be a mystery ;) Having your module in the Desktop would probably also elevate the number of unexperienced users dramatically.
