You're getting it the wrong way around I think:

I think (but my guess is as good as any) that the intention here is to
have evolution use the information you provide here.
Gaim doesn't use gconf, so that's a different story altogether

But it *DOES* know your name! It's in /etc/passwd! (or in LDAP; anyway
the point is that there are existing UNIX API's to get that information)
