Well, the main problem is that nearly nobody is working on them right now
and there are still some bugs/useful enhancement requests for them
(especially since we added the e-d-s integration to the clock). I think at
least the clock and the notification area would benefit, in term of
development, from such a move.

However, the fact that they're on the default panel is a good point. Maybe
we should simply try to find someone who is not crazy enough to hack on
the panel but wants to fix some bugs in those applets and give him the
maintainer badge? ;-)
