Hi Shaun.
Focusing on having an icon for every single mime type in the world is
not a feature. It leads to numerous problems. We tried to 'keep up' with
these needs in the past, and contrary to what some people think here, we
failed. We managed to make the icon theme unthemable, failed to provide
all the necessary sizes so the icons looked like a fuzzy blob in many
places.
The 'slim down the core theme' is not happening to have artists do less
work. We do not aim to stop creating artwork once we have all the
generic icons in place.
It's happening to have a consistent looking desktop AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
There is no end to creating every single device icon or mime type. There
is a limited number of generic types though. We started with those.
