To be honest, I actually like that the current gnome main menu is made
up kind of like an application menu bar; you quickly see which
categories there are and can choose the one that fits your task. A
single menu quickly tends to get pretty big (see also the SLED menu or
even the windows xp/vista menu). Horizontal space is also not a big
deal, at least not in the stock gnome / ubuntu case of having two
panels. I would really go with this design, I don't know why very few
other alternative menus follow this concept. (Gimme is the only one I
can think of, but is has it's own issues currently.)
