Hi all;

I believe I started this discussion with first questions on the users
list, followed by a bug submission.

I have read all the posts/arguments submitted here on this issue.

Let me just say:
      * x and y coordinate keys already exist in gconf for some
        applications
      * I have given an example where and why I would really like to set
        a default position -- probably others would to.
      * Gconf gives you the option of 'default' and 'mandatory'.
        Default can be overridden by moving the window while it is on
        screen.
      * There are some applications which the user would want to set so
        they start in a default position no matter what the coordinates
        may have been at shutdown.
      * Making it so applications can be launched at startup with
        default positioning, should be a choice available to the user if
        it fulfils a need.  In my case, it does.

The bugzilla discussion gives more detail but reflects these main
points.  Although it has to be done by root, I prefer the gconf method
on an application-by-application basis over some command line geometry
switch because there are several (four I can think of off hand) ways to
launch by command -- each would need to have --geometry +x+y included as
a switch.  Gconf makes it (semi)-permanent.  Gconf reflects that the
need is only occasional for a few select applications; not something
needed all the time.
