The point is not whether there are great Canvas libraries available
(there are) but which one can be used in a application that is part of
GNOME and as cannot easily depend on library xy but only on those in the
release set. And this questions hasn't been answered in any way yet.
Such I propose FooCanvas as a simple alternative for simple tasks
without too much porting effort.
