Hello && About Maintainership of Gtranslator

Hi all,

I have been using gtranslator for years, and I love it. Lack of updates on gtranslator has been bugging me for quite some time, and I have decided to take action after seeing it on the Unmaintained list.[0]

I would like to help fix its bugs (when/if I can), and at least keep it alive/usable. And I would be happy to co-maintain it with a more experienced maintainer/developer.

I first wrote a message about this to the gtranslator-list, and also CC'ed the last maintainer about seven weeks ago. About two weeks ago (if I am not mistaken) on irc (#gtranslator), he told that he had been busy, and he would write a proper response soon. On Alexandre Franke's suggestion, we have been waiting for the reponse to get some insight about Seán's plans for the master branch since the old UI was wiped in master, and it is not in a usable state. I am still waiting for that.

In the meantime, I committed a few patches to the current master and the gtranslator-2-91 branches (thanks to Alexandre Franke for the reviews on bugzilla). And I have also submitted a few more patches to bugzilla.[1][2] (Reviews are most appreciated. :))

I have been a local GNOME advocate, and a translator so far. And I would love to continue my GNOME journey also as a developer.

Any help and directions are appreciated.

Hi Muhammet,

Yes, writing to d-d-l is a good idea to discuss with other maintainers how to take the maintainership of Gtranslator. You could also contact with Ignacio Casal, who was maintainer in the past, and is more available than Sean (as Marcos said, he usually doesn't answer emails), but protocol must be followed ;-)

I've seen Alexandre Franke has reviewd/approved some patches... you could also take him into account to get some help in hte beginning. As I said in other mail, I could help testing patches and suggesting some improvements and bug fixes, but I'm not prepared to review code or fix it.

It has been more than two weeks without response from the maintainer, and I am getting impatient about putting Gtranslator back on track. :) What should I do now to move forward with the maintainership process? Should I forward this discussion to the desktop-devel-list or some other list or person?

Great! I would be happy to improve/fix gtranslator (as much as I can). I have also talked to afranke on irc about my interest in development/maintainership of gtranslator.

In the meantime, I have uploaded two patches (based on your patch) to fix bug #697006, and another patch towards fixing bug #776327.

First of all, many thanks for yor interest in helping wih the development of Gtranslator. Its much appreciated!

Actually, maintainer is missing, but you could try to contact him before taking the maintanership of Gtranslator. If he doesn't answer in about 2 weeks, I would vote for yo to take over the module. I'm not a developer, so reviewing patches is a bit hard for me, but I could test them and try to guide you in which bugs should require your first attention.
